Kyoto 2-Day Itinerary

A route designed around geography to reduce backtracking.

Last updated: September 23, 2026 · Prototype launch article · 2026

Kyoto is a geography problem

The easiest way to waste time in Kyoto is to combine too many distant temple districts in one day. Group Higashiyama, Fushimi, Arashiyama, central Kyoto and northern Kyoto separately.

Useful pattern: start early at a major outdoor site, move to one nearby district, and keep evening activities central.

Respect matters

Many famous streets are also residential or working neighborhoods. Follow local photography rules and avoid blocking narrow lanes.

Make it practical

Editorial draft strengthened in v5. Live prices, opening hours and closures still need a final check before publication.

A realistic two-day structure

Fushimi and Gion/Kiyomizu are separate but workable on one day with an early start. Arashiyama should usually get its own half-day because crossing Kyoto consumes time.
